The Organizing Committee

Dear colleagues and friends,

On behalf of Eucarpia, the members of the Local Organizing Committee are proud to invite you to the XIIth Eucarpia Meeting on Cucurbit Genetics and Breeding, which will be held in Almeria (Spain) from May 4 - 7, 2020. This scientific event will be organized by three institutions, the University of Almería, the Institute for Mediterranean and Subtropical Horticulture "La Mayora" in Málaga, and the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

This meeting is arranged every four years by the Cucurbitaceae working group of EUCARPIA. Although Eucarpia is an organization for plant breeding there is no doubt that breeders need the cooperation, the knowledge and the technics of pathologists, physiologists and biotechnologists to get success in their breeding objectives. The Congress is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest research in those fields, but also to promote discussion and exchange of ideas among leading scientists from European and non-European countries all over the world.

Almería is the European region with the largest greenhouse vegetable production area in the EU. The nearly 30,000 hectares of greenhouses are devoted mainly to the production of Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae fruits, including the latter important horticultural crops such as cucumber, zucchini, melon and watermelon. But Almeria is no longer just an important center for horticultural production, but is increasingly a reference site for the development of greenhouse-associated technology. The new varieties “made in Almería” are everytime more appreciated for their cultivation all over the world.

Attending Cucurbitaceae 2020 you will participate in active discussions and cutting-edge lectures regarding the advances in scientific areas related to Genetics and Breeding of Cucurbit species. Besides, you will have the great opportunity of visiting the most avant-garde horticultural production systems in Europe. Almería also offers a unique culture, maritime landscape and gastronomy, which surprises many of the visitors who come to the province looking for the large number of sun hours we enjoy in the South-East of Spain.

The local organizing Committee of Cucurbitaceae 2020 look forward to welcome you in Almería, from 4-7 of May, 2020.
